Tales of Eternia Recipes and Cooking Guide

Cooking in Tales of Eternia Remastered: how the 36-recipe cookbook works, the Wonder Chef, the Chambard contest, and four official real-world dishes.

Tales of Eternia Recipes and Cooking Guide

Cooking in Tales of Eternia Remastered happens outside battle. You learn a recipe, cook one dish after an encounter, and the dish heals the party or raises its stats for the next fight. The original book holds 36 entries, and 27 of them come from the Wonder Chef, who hides inside ordinary scenery. The Remastered release keeps the system and changes one setting: auto-cook now defaults to your most proficient cook. Bandai Namco also published four real kitchen recipes for this release on September 25, 2026, and those are summarized at the end of this page.

  • Recipes are found, not bought. No shop in Eternia sells them.
  • One dish per battle, resolved after the fight, never during it.
  • Cooking proficiency is tracked per character, so pick one cook and stay with them.
  • Recipes carry into a second playthrough as their own on/off entry, separately from items and artes.

How the Cooking System Works

Acquisition is the slow part. The Wonder Chef hides inside ordinary objects in towns across both continents and only appears when you examine the right one, which is why PlayStation-era documentation catalogs recipes by disguise rather than by NPC name: a plant in the Mintche University cafeteria, a piggy bank in a house in Rasheans, a wine bottle in a Chambard bistro, a snowman in the Peruti inn. He is never marked on the map.

Cooking itself is a menu action that resolves after a battle ends. One recipe per battle, and the effect applies to the party rather than to the cook. The results fall into three groups: flat percentage healing and TP recovery, status cures, and temporary increases to attack, defense, accuracy or resistance.

A recipe levels up as you cook it. Original-release guidance puts mastery of a single dish at roughly fourteen to fifteen cooks of the same recipe, and that is an approximation rather than a published table, so judge progress by watching the dish's healing output rise. Proficiency is tracked per character, which is why the old warning exists: one character has to master the whole book, because the final recipes are not granted to a party that split the cooking between them. Failure has one consolation, and it is a useful one, since every failed attempt hands you a random elemental Shard.

Auto-cook is the shortcut that makes the grind automatic. On the original release it is set from the cooking screen and repeats your chosen dish on a schedule, every battle, every fifth battle, every tenth battle, or on a condition such as a poisoned party member. It still resolves after the encounter, not during it.

Level one cook, not the cookbook

The eight late recipes need mastered dishes, and mastery is per character. Rotating dishes between Farah, Keele and Meredy spreads proficiency around without ever finishing a chain, so choose your cook early and let them take every meal.

What the Remastered Release Changes About Cooking

The recipe system survives intact. One setting was reworked, and Bandai Namco's own change list describes the adjustment as follows.

When the cooking auto setting is switched ON, the character with the highest cooking proficiency is selected by default. Where several characters share the highest proficiency, Inferia dishes prioritize the Inferia-born character and Celestia dishes prioritize the Celestia-born character. The character who cooks while the auto setting is on can also be changed by hand.

That closes a gap the original left open, where the setting could hand your best dish to a party member with no proficiency at all. The origin tiebreak is a sensible second layer, since the party is drawn from both Inferia and Celestia, and the manual override means the default is a starting point rather than a lock.

Two further remaster facts touch cooking. Cooking recipes appear as their own toggle on the save-transfer screen that loads from cleared data, alongside character information, learned artes, items, Lens status, commands, and the two encyclopedias, so a second run starts with the book already written. That list is also where the Day-1 v.2.0.0 patch added titles. Separately, mini-games received a skip function and an in-progress retry, which matters here because the cooking contest is one of the mini-games.

The Cooking Contest in Chambard

The contest is the one place where cooking becomes the event itself. It runs in Chambard in three rounds, and each round pays a title to Farah rather than Gald.

Round Title for Farah Condition (original release)
First 3-Star Chef Win the first round of the cooking contest
Second Kitchen Star Win the second round
Third Warrior Chef Win the third round

Three details decide a round, and all three come from original-era documentation rather than from a remaster source. Level the recipe you are asked to cook to at least 4 beforehand, because judging follows the dish's proficiency tier and an unlevelled dish cannot score high enough. Pick the correct ingredients on the cooking screen, since a wrong ingredient is simply a wrong dish. Then bring one extra item matching the judge's wording: if the request is something zesty, the answer is a Lemon.

Mastering the whole book is the other cooking title chase, and unlike the contest it pays per character. Farah earns Kitchen Specialist, Keele earns Grand Chef, Max earns Head Chef, and Chat earns Kitchen King, each for mastering every recipe. The official change list says nothing about the contest itself, so the round structure above is PlayStation-era documentation and not a confirmed remaster ruleset.

No verified achievement covers the contest either. Of the eleven achievement names confirmed from the Steam achievement page as of October 17, 2026, none involves cooking; the only food-adjacent entry is Speed-Eating Champion, which the official description frames as a speed-eating contest against Kong the Man, and no source ties that to the Chambard contest.

The Full Recipe List

These numbers are original-release data

Bandai Namco publishes no per-recipe ingredient or effect table for the Remastered release. The names, ingredients, effects and hiding places below come from PlayStation-era documentation for Tales of Eternia, which shipped in North America as Tales of Destiny II. Treat the percentages as the old benchmark rather than verified remaster values.

Tuna Paella Rice, Shrimp, Squid, Tuna, Purple Satay 30% HP, Attack and Defense up Every Wonder Chef recipe up to Sweet Rice

Add Dark Pot, the starting recipe, whose ingredients are random and whose result can be a bad one, and the original list reaches 36 entries: 27 taught by the Wonder Chef, eight unlocked by mastery, and the starter. Potato Casserole and Mabo Curry are the only permanent stat gains in the book, adding 1 Max HP and 1 Max TP each time you cook them, and both sit behind a three- or four-recipe mastery chain rather than a boss. Tuna Paella is the last unlock.

Ingredients, Shops and Prices

Ingredients are ordinary shop stock. The prices below are original-release shop data, and the one worth planning around is Purple Satay at 200 Gald, because all eight combination recipes need it. Cooking one of each therefore costs 1,600 Gald in satay alone, before the meat and the rice.

Ingredient Shop Price
Tuna Port Barole 20
Carrot Regulus Dojo 50
Egg Inferia City 50
Milk Barole 50
Onion Mintche 50
Potato Barole 50
Bread Rasheans 60
Cheese Rasheans 60
Pasta Barole 60
Red Satay Luishka Station 60
White Satay Imen 60
Rice Mintche 100
Black Satay Luishka Station 100
Bear Meat Regulus Dojo 150
Tusk Meat Imen 150
Purple Satay Gnome Village / Katz Village 200

Barole is the most useful early stop, stocking Milk, Pasta and Potato, and Regulus Dojo covers the Bear Meat that eight recipes call for. Port Barole is where the cheap protein is, with Tuna at 20 and Shrimp and Squid at 80 each. Purple Satay is the late bottleneck, more than three times the price of a Red Satay and sold only in Gnome Village or Katz Village, so buy it in bulk once either shop opens instead of topping up item by item.

The Four Official Real-World Recipes

Bandai Namco runs a series called Tales of Recipes Remastered alongside the remastered releases, turning dishes from each game into real kitchen recipes. The Tales of Eternia Remastered entry was published on September 25, 2026, complete with equipment lists and step-by-step directions.

Published dish Closest in-game recipe What the published recipe actually is
Power Udon Power Noodles Udon in a broth of mentsuyu, soy sauce, mirin, sake and sugar, topped with fishcake, green onion and marinated beef short ribs
Fruit Sandwich Fruit Sandwich Thick-cut Japanese milk bread with whipped cream, strawberries, tangerines and kiwi, wrapped tight and chilled before slicing
Hot & Cold Noodles Cold Noodles Chilled ramen with cucumber, thin omelette, tomato and ham in a rice vinegar, soy, ginger and lemon dressing
Fruit Pudding No match in the original list Instant almond pudding mix set with water, chilled for two hours, then topped with fruit and syrup

The caveats matter more than the table. The dish-to-recipe cross-reference is mine, not Bandai Namco's: the published page gives dish names and ingredient lists without claiming a one-to-one mapping onto the in-game book. Three of the four line up cleanly; Fruit Pudding has no counterpart in the original list, so it may be a themed dessert rather than an omitted dish. These are kitchen recipes, so they say nothing about in-game ingredient counts or effects, and two of them lean on Japanese pantry items, mentsuyu and thick-cut milk bread, that decide whether the result looks like the photograph.

FAQ

How do you cook in Tales of Eternia Remastered? It is a post-battle action, not a battle command. Pick a dish after an encounter, the selected character cooks it, and the effect lands on the party. One dish per battle, and auto-cook can repeat it on a schedule or on a condition such as a poisoned party member.

Where do you find recipes? From the Wonder Chef, who hides inside ordinary objects in towns across Inferia and Celestia and appears when you examine the right one. On the original release that is the only source for the first 27 recipes; the last eight unlock by mastering combinations of earlier dishes. He is unmarked, which is why guides catalog recipes by disguise.

How many times do you cook a recipe to master it? Original-release guidance puts mastery at roughly fourteen to fifteen cooks of the same dish. It is an approximation, and no Remastered-release source publishes a proficiency table, so watch the dish's healing output instead of counting attempts.

Do recipes carry over to New Game Plus? Yes. The save-transfer screen lists cooking recipes as an individually toggleable entry, alongside character information, learned artes, items, Lens status and the two encyclopedias. The Day-1 v.2.0.0 patch also added titles to the same list.

Is the Chambard cooking contest still in the remaster? The official change list does not mention it either way and no Remastered-release source publishes a ruleset, so treat the three-round structure as original-release documentation. What is confirmed is that mini-games gained a skip function and a mid-play retry, which makes a failed attempt far cheaper than on the original disc.
